Workplace Safety, Health and Welfare Induction is brought to you by the Health and Safety Authority and ATU Sligo. This online course is suitable for new employees, people returning to the workplace after a break, and students on work experience. It is also a useful refresher course for employees. The course is accessible on the ATU platform when you select 'Enter Course' from this page. 

 

Course duration: There are eight units in total. Units 1 and 2 are compulsory and are approximately 45 minutes each. Units 3-8 are optional and are approximately 20 minutes each.

If you are an employer you can select the options most appropriate to your employees. The Group Manager facility for this course is currently unavailable on hsalearning.ie. but can be accessed on the Induction course homepage on the ATU platform. The ATU Privacy Policy applies once you are on the platform. 

Certification and digital badges:
A certificate is awarded to participants for completing Units 1 and 2, and for each of the optional Units 3-8. An assessment must also be completed at the end of each Unit.  A minimum score of 80% is required to pass. Digital badges are also awarded for Unit completion and for completing the course in full.

The eight units and their associated learning outcomes are:

Unit 1: Health and safety at work (Part 1) (Compulsory Unit)
At the end of Unit 1, participants should be able to:
• differentiate between employer and employee duties with regard to safety, health and welfare in the workplace
• understand the role of the Health and Safety Authority
• identify what to do in the event of a workplace accident and what a reportable workplace accident is
• describe a safety statement including its purpose
• outline the role of a safety officer and safety representative and the benefits of consultation in the workplace

Unit 2: Health and safety at work (Part 2) (Compulsory Unit)
At the end of Unit 2, participants should be able to:
• recognise the importance of positive safety behaviour in the workplace
• understand personal responsibility
• identify safety signs and their meaning
• describe the factors that can impact safety, health and welfare at work
• define stress and list some of the measures that can help to reduce work-related stress

Unit 3: Manual handling
At the end of Unit 3, participants should be able to:
• define manual handling
• outline the main causes of manual handling injuries
• understand the employer's role in conducting manual handling risk assessments
• outline some of the control measures for preventing manual handling injuries

Unit 4: Ergonomics
At the end of Unit 4, participants should be able to:
• define ergonomics
• list some ergonomic hazards and the effects of poor ergonomics
• identify some of the measures workplaces take to reduce the risk of injury
• outline ergonomic improvements that can be applied to a computer workstation

Unit 5: Housekeeping in the workplace
At the end of Unit 5, participants should be able to:
• outline the benefits of good 'housekeeping' in the workplace
• recognise common slip, trip and fall hazards in the workplace
• describe the factors that can cause workplace slips, trips and falls, and how these are managed

Unit 6: Chemical safety
At the end of Unit 6, participants should be able to:
• understand the purpose of a chemical label and a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
• recognise hazard pictograms and their meaning
• outline how chemicals can enter the body
• identify some of the control measures that workplaces implement for working with chemicals

Unit 7: Workplace transport safety
At the end of Unit 7, participants should be able to:
• identify some of the hazards associated with workplace transport
• understand the main causes of workplace transport accidents
• demonstrate an awareness of the controls in place to protect drivers and pedestrians

Unit 8: Noise and machinery
At the end of Unit 8, participants should be able to:
• outline some of the main hazards associated with machinery
• understand why control measures are in place and how risk is managed
• describe the effects of noise exposure in the workplace
• understand the purpose of PPE
