Keep Safe Roadshow Comes to Monaghan School Children

More than 100 children from St. Louis N.S., Monaghan Town, St. Mary's Boys N.S., Monaghan Town, St. Michael's N.S., Corcaghan, Monaghan, St. Michael's N.S., Rackwallace, Castleshane, and St. Mary's N.S., Threemilehouse, Monaghan, have today (Tuesday 11 November) attended a Health and Safety Authority 'Keep Safe' event at Corcaghan Hall, Monaghan.
Ten state agencies and regional organisations with a safety remit came together to deliver an interactive safety programme directed at fifth and sixth class pupils. The 'Keep Safe' programme aims to promote safety and community awareness through involving the children in a series of fun and interactive scenarios with an underlying safety theme.
Joanne Harmon, Education Manager with the Health and Safety Authority said, "This event raises awareness in school children and teaches them how to deal with hazards in a whole range of situations from electrical safety to water safety. The fifth and sixth class students that attend these events learn a lot and we have designed all of the activities to be fun and informative. I would like to thank all of the schools and agencies in attendance today. Their enthusiasm is what makes this programme a continued success."
The aims of the one day 'Keep Safe' event are to help children to:
- become aware of personal and home safety,
- learn how to react to dangerous situations,
- foster good citizenship,
- learn how to recognise hazards and manage risks,
- learn how to stay safe within the context of, for example, road safety, water safety, fire safety and building site safety.
The agencies and organisations that were represented today include the Health & Safety Authority, An Taisce Green-Schools, Civil Defence Monaghan, Construction Industry Federation (CIF), Monaghan Fire Authority, ESB Networks, Garda Síochána Monaghan, Irish Water Safety (IWS), and Teagasc.
