Forestry Sector

The forestry sector is considered a growth sector with in excess of 700,000 hectares of forestry in the country. Approximately 10 % of the total land area of Ireland is under forestry.

It is estimated that the crop establishment, harvesting and logistics sectors of forestry employ up to 4,000 people with up to another 2,500 employed in associated processing manufacturing plants.

Persons working in this sector are exposed to several safety and health hazards. Particular risks include handling of heavy loads, mechanised harvesting, working outdoors in a challenging environment, felling trees using chainsaws and lone working.
