OSHVET Project: Occupational Safety and Health For Teachers and Students in Vocational Education and Training

What is the OSHVET project?

The OSHVET project promotes occupational safety and health (OSH) to teachers and students in vocational education across Europe. This project is led by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA). For more information, please see the EU-OSHA website.

The project aims to build an extensive network, capitalising on the existing networks of EU-OSHA’s National Focal Points and European partner organisations — the European Association of Institutes for Vocational Training (EVBB) and the European forum of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (EfVET).

OSHVET in Ireland

In Ireland, the project was launched by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and Galway Technical Institute (GTI) in February 2024. GTI is one of the leading colleges of Further Education in Ireland, providing QQI Level 5 & 6 courses to over 1,100 learners annually.

Current Project Activities

The first year focused on creating resources for apprentices and students in FET. This included ‘Safe Use of Chemicals in Further Education and Training’, ‘Safety on the Job for Apprentices’ and ‘Employing Apprentices: Safety on the Job'. Also, a preliminary case study addressing OSH promotion with staff and students at GTI was commenced. For more information on project activities, please see our case study.

How to Get Involved

In 2025, the project aims to involve more FET colleges in Ireland. If interested, FET colleges can join or learn more by contacting Dr. Joan Cahill (Joan_Cahill@hsa.ie).
