Keep Safe Roadshow Comes to Dun Laoghaire Schoolchildren

One hundred children in Dun Laoghaire have today (Monday 21st June) attended a ‘Keep Safe’ event in the IADT in Dun Laoghaire.  Ten agencies and organisations came together to deliver the programme which is aimed at 5th and 6th class pupils.  It aims to promote safety and community awareness through involving the children in a series of interactive scenarios, with a strong safety theme.

The event, hosted by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) was opened the HSA Chief Executive, Martin O Halloran. Junior Achievement Ireland facilitated the event.

The schools which took part in the event were St Josephs National School, Dun Laoghaire and Kill o’the Grange National School.

The aims of the one day “Keep Safe” event are to help children to:

  • become aware of personal and home safety
  • learn how to react to dangerous situations
  • foster good citizenship
  • learn how to recognise hazards and manage risks
  • learn how to stay safe within the context of, for example, road safety, water safety, fire safety and site safety.

Martin O’Halloran, Chief Executive of the Authority added, “The Keep Safe initiative is tailored especially for school children and designed to be an enjoyable and interactive way for them to learn about issues like water safety, electricity, road safety and more. This kind of multi-agency approach where resources and knowledge are used together for the benefit of the community is to be welcomed and encouraged.”

The agencies and organisations that were represented on the day included: Health and Safety Authority (HSA), Junior Achievement Ireland, Bus Éireann, Dublin Fire Brigade, St. John’s Ambulance, RNLI, Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue, Irish Water Safety,Construction Industry Federation , ESB Networks, Gardai (Road Safety).
