Keep Safe Roadshow Comes to Galway Schoolchildren

Over one hundred and twenty children have today (Thursday 23rd September) attended a ‘Keep Safe’ event in Scoil Chaitríona, Renmore, Co. Galway. A range of state agencies and organisations came together to deliver the programme which is directed at 5th and 6th class pupils. It aims to promote safety and community awareness through involving the children in a series of interactive scenarios with a strong safety theme.
The event, hosted by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), was opened by Dermot Carey, Chairperson of the HSA’s Western Regional Advisory Committee. Junior Achievement Ireland facilitated the event. The schools taking part were Scoil Chaitríona, Renmore and Holy Trinity NS, Mervue.
Opening the event Dermot Carey said, “The Keep Safe initiative is specially designed for school children and aims to be an enjoyable and interactive way for them to learn about issues like water safety, electricity, road safety and more. This kind of multi-agency approach where resources and knowledge are used together for the benefit of the community is to be welcomed and encouraged.”
The aims of the one day ‘Keep Safe’ event are to help children to:
- become aware of personal and home safety,
- learn how to react to dangerous situations,
- foster good citizenship,
- learn how to recognise hazards and manage risks,
- learn how to stay safe within the context of, for example, road safety, water safety, fire safety and site safety.
The agencies and organisations that were represented on the day include the Health and Safety Authority, Junior Achievement Ireland, Bus Éireann, An Garda Síochána, Galway Mountain Rescue, RNLI, Construction Industry Federation and ESB Networks.
