Occupational Disease Reporting

The following occupational diseases must be reported to the Health and Safety Authority:

1. Asbestos-Related Occupational Disease

In accordance with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Exposure to Asbestos) Regulations 2006- 2025,  a Registered Medical Practitioner who becomes aware of a case(s) of an Asbestos-Related Occupational Disease, must report the case in writing  to The Authority. An indicative list of diseases that can be caused by exposure to asbestos is set out in Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Exposure to Asbestos) Regulations 2006- 2025, Schedule 5 Part B.

A notification can be made to the HSA Contact Unit at contactus@hsa.ie.

2. Diseases or Deaths Caused by Biological Agents

In accordance with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Biological Agents) Regulations 2013 (S.I. No. 572/2013), and as amended an employer or registered medical practitioner must report a case(s) of disease or death of an employee resulting from occupational exposure to a biological agent. 
A notification can be made by using the Biological Agents Report (BAR) form. Please submit the completed form to the HSA Contact Unit at contactus@hsa.ie.

3. Occupational Cancer and Other Adverse Health Effects Caused by Carcinogenic, Reprotoxic, or Mutagenic Substances

In accordance with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Carcinogens, Mutagens and Reprotoxic Substances) Regulations 2024 (S.I. No. 122/2024), an employer or a Registered Medical Practitioner must report to The Authority any case of:

  • Occupational cancer,

  • Adverse effects on sexual function and fertility in adult male or female employees, or

  • Developmental toxicity in the offspring of employees, or other adverse health effects caused by exposure to carcinogenic, reprotoxic, or mutagenic substances.

A notification can be made by using the CMR Occupational Disease form. Please submit the completed form to the HSA Contact Unit at contactus@hsa.ie.

Other Occupational illnesses or impairments of mental condition are not reportable under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Reporting of Accidents and Dangerous Occurrences) Regulations 2016 (S.I. No. 370/2016) and as amended.
